How to Set Your Consulting Rate: A Complete Framework

Start with Market Rates

Your baseline is what the market pays for your specialty at a mid-level (3-5 years experience). Don't guess — use benchmarks:

Where you live AND where your clients are matters. Apply a location multiplier:

Critical: Price to your *client's* market, not your cost of living. A consultant in Poland billing US clients should use US multipliers.

Cross-Check with Income Goals

Work backwards from what you need to earn:

**Formula:** Target Annual Income ÷ (Billable Hours/Week × 48 Weeks) = Required Hourly Rate

Example: $150k target ÷ (25 hrs/week × 48 weeks) = **$125/hr**

**Realistic billable hours by model:** - Solo independent: 20-30 hrs/week (rest = sales, admin, learning) - Agency/subcontractor: 30-35 hrs/week - Full-time contractor: 35-40 hrs/week

If your market rate ($119) < income-based rate ($125), you have a gap. Options: raise rate, increase billable hours, lower income target, or upskill to a higher-paying specialty.

Your Final Rate Range

Don't quote a single number. Give a **range** based on engagement type:
